Key Challenges & Project Details
- Relocation of existing water mains and storm drains on the perimeter of United States Capitol’s East Plaza to allow construction of the US Capitol Visitors Center
- Location is one of the oldest, most congested and most prestigious sections of Washington, D.C.
- Corman offered expertise to develop technical solutions for site condition conflicts encountered during construction
- Involved water distribution systems including: 400 LF 12″ north fire protection, 500 LF 12″ and 8″ south fire protection, 200 LF 8″ domestic water, 2,400 LF 12″ main loop and feeder system, and a 3,000 LF 30″ water distribution system
- Each system required construction of various structures and appurtenances
- Two storm drainage systems were facilitated, including a 20′ deep, 60″ diameter liner plate tunnel under existing pedestrian tunnel
- Removed and permanently bulkheaded sections of several existing tunnels for utilities installation
- Installed 24” line stop bypass/valve insertion
- Incorporated mechanical soil anchors into thrust blocking
- Corman/DCWASA developed alternate path for 36” water line along Maryland Ave
- Stringent security provisions
- Vehicle security barrier construction
- Installation of Nasatka automobile barriers around the complex for the Architect of the Capitol
- Excavated trench system across major streets and around Capitol
- Installed conduit system for electrician
- 10 x 20 x 10 vault street and sidewalk installation for hydraulic gear to remotely power barriers
