Key Challenges & Project Details
- Construction of approximately 4.5 miles of two-lane road
- Two-lane asphalt roadway with numerous stream and wetland crossings
- 4 bridges, 2 noise walls and 9 stream crossings
- Involved impacts to forest, waters of the US and permanent/temporary wetlands
- Construction scheduled around in-stream restrictions for Use I, II and IV waterways
- Some areas include special protection Bog Turtle Habitat, with unique accommodations implemented into design
- New drainage; roundabout lighting; 8 cross culverts; route landscaping and approx. 900,000 CY cut-to-fill
- 13 new stormwater management ponds with micro-pools, 3 using traditional risers and outfall pipe, and 10 with various weir walls
- Placed seven, 59-ton girders in one day via two hydraulic cranes and a skid beam to overcome limited space/access
- Public relations included an 800 telephone line, monthly newsletters and customer satisfaction log
- Project awarded on best value and set precedent as first Maryland SHA Design-Build to include bridge design by Design-Builder
