Key Challenges & Project Details

  • Rehabilitation and replacement of two 50+ year old structurally-deficient bridges on Rowe Boulevard, the central artery coming off US Route 50 in Annapolis leading to the Maryland’s historic State Capital
  • New and rigorous environmental compliance criteria established by SHA, requiring redundant installation and maintenance of sediment and erosion controls for the duration of construction, including silt fence, sand-bag dikes, diversion berms, compost-filled mesh tubes, oil booms, demolition debris shields and turbidity curtains
  • Total replacement of the Weems Creek Bridge
    • 720’ supported by 18” pipe pile ranging from 55’ to 120’ and includes more than 3000 CY of substructure concrete and 2000 CY on its deck
    • Design and installation of floating coffer dams for pier cap foundations
    • Three retaining walls and bioretention facilities that flank the ends of the bridge, one of which includes a split-level MSE wall
  • Superstructure replacement and substructure rehabilitation of the College Creek Bridge
    • 930’ bridge utilized a reversible lane control system and a temporary sidewalk in order to be completed in two phases instead of the three originally proposed
    • Remaining retaining walls and bioretention facilities located at the North end of the bridge include decorative gates that welcome drivers to the City of Annapolis
